The first fully curved-display iPhone from Apple's stable is expected to launch in 2027 to mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. The device, sometimes referred to as the iPhone 20, is rumoured to feature a “micro-curved” or “quad-curved” OLED display that extends around all four sides — making it a truly bezel-less design that is often referred to as Liquid Glass. However, a new report claims that Apple is already working to improve its debut curved-display iPhone with an updated version in 2028 that could feature an advanced panel.
Advanced Curved-Display iPhone With IZO Tech Planned For 2028
Apple first intends to introduce a four-sided curved display on the 20th-anniversary iPhone slated for 2027, with a nearly bezel-less appearance, a new report by ET News says. At the same time, Apple is reportedly in talks with Samsung Display and LG Display to use Indium Zinc Oxide (IZO) as the cathode material for OLED panels in the 2028 model. Apple is aiming to overcome the drawbacks of the magnesium-silver alloy cathodes currently used in displays.
In display panels that curve on all four sides, traditional cathode materials can cause image distortion and lower brightness in the curved areas of a smartphone. The use of IZO technology is expected to enhance the transparency of the cathode layer. It could help reduce visual distortions, uneven brightness, and heat buildup near the panel edges.
As per the report, LG Display's recent announcement of a 1.106 trillion won investment in OLED production infrastructure is linked to the manufacturing of IZO-based panels. Producing IZO cathodes requires specialised low-damage sputtering equipment that is not currently available on standard smartphone OLED lines. The report added that Samsung Display is contemplating two options: modify its existing facilities or develop a new production line for the IZO panels.
However, supply chain rumours — although often reliable — should still be taken with a pinch of salt considering Apple would be prioritising its 20th-anniversary curved iPhone, and its 2028 roadmap could still take a turn.
