Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Punjab Kings by 23 runs and become the first team to qualify for the IPL playoffs on Sunday.

Powered by Venkatesh Iyer's explosive unbeaten 73 off 40 balls, along with valuable contributions from Virat Kohli (58), Devdutt Padikkal (45) and Tim David (28 off 12), RCB posted a massive 222 for 4 after being asked to bat first.

In reply, Punjab Kings managed 199 for 8 despite a fighting 56 off 27 balls from Shashank Singh and 37 from Marcus Stoinis. The defeat marked PBKS' sixth straight loss after a promising start to the season.

RCB struck early in the chase as Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Priyansh Arya in the opening over before also removing Prabhsimran Singh. Rasikh Salam then sent back skipper Shreyas Iyer cheaply to leave Punjab struggling inside the Power Play.

Shashank Singh kept PBKS alive with an aggressive counterattack, smashing three sixes in one over against Suyash Sharma, while Stoinis also chipped in with crucial boundaries. However, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Stoinis at a key moment, and Punjab eventually fell short in the steep chase.

Earlier, Kohli and Padikkal laid the foundation with a 76-run partnership for the second wicket after Jacob Bethell's early dismissal. Kohli brought up his half-century in 31 balls before Venkatesh took charge in the middle overs with a flurry of boundaries and sixes to push RCB past the 220-run mark.

What Punjab Kings Need To Do To Qualify For Playoffs?

Punjab Kings have now lost six straight games and are stuck at fourth place with 13 points from 13 games. There season can be split into two halves. In the first half Punjab dominated the league winning six of their first seven games while one match (against Kolkata Knight Riders) ended in No Result as it had to be abandoned due to rain. In the second half of the season, the team has lost six matches in a row, which has left them in a precarious position as far as playoff qualification is concerned.

The Shreays Iyer-led side now only one league game remaining (against Lucknow Super Giants) which will be played on May 23. It becomes a must-win match for the 2025 finalists in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. Even a win against struggling LSG will not be sufficient for Punjab. A victory over LSG will take Punjab to 15 points but then the team has to hope that the chasing pack of Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders do not end up with 15 ore more points. If that happens then Punjab will fail to qualify for the playoffs.
