The 2026 Indian Super League season is heading towards a thrilling finale, with five teams — East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Jamshedpur FC, Bengaluru FC and FC Goa — still firmly in contention for the title.
League leaders East Bengal will host Punjab FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan or the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Monday in what promises to be a crucial encounter. East Bengal sit atop the standings with 21 points from 10 matches, while Punjab are placed seventh with 18 points from the same number of games.
East Bengal remained unbeaten in their last five outings with four wins and a draw. Punjab, meanwhile, have also shown encouraging form, registering three victories in their previous five matches, while recording one draw and one defeat.
With the ISL being played in a shortened format this season, every team faces each opponent only once. As a result, every point has become vital, with the side finishing at the top of the table after 14 league matches set to be crowned champions.
East Bengal head into this fixture on the back of a hard fought come-from-behind win over Mumbai City FC. Brandon Fernandes' goal in the opening 10 minutes of the game propelled Mumbai to an early lead. However, Youssef Ezzejjrai's second-half penalty and Nandhakumar Sekar's 71'st minute goal ensured that East Bengal kept their unbeaten streak alive.
Punjab, too, tasted success in their previous game. An own goal by Lalrinliana Hnamte in the 84th minute ensured that Punjab beat Chennaiyin FC.
East Bengal have hit top gear under head coach Oscar Bruzon, with the Spaniard's tactical tweaks finally delivering impressive results. A victory against Punjab FC would further strengthen East Bengal's position in the title race. The attacking duo of Miguel and Youssef has been central to their success, while defender Kevin Sibille will be tasked with keeping Punjab striker Luka Majcen and the visitors' attack quiet. It will not be easy for East Bengal as Punjab's spirited display against Mohun Bagan earlier this season showcased their ability to compete against the league's strongest sides.
