Carlos Alcaraz has been ruled out of French Open, ending his bid for a third consecutive title at Roland Garros due to a wrist injury.

The world number two sustained the injury during the opening round of the Barcelona Open earlier this month and was forced to withdraw. Subsequent medical scans revealed the problem was more serious than initially expected, prompting him to also pull out of the Madrid Open and the upcoming Italian Open.

In a statement issued on his social media handles, Alcaraz said the decision was made as a precaution. He explained that skipping both Rome and Roland Garros would allow time to properly assess his recovery and determine a safe return to competition. The 22-year-old described the situation as difficult but expressed confidence in coming back stronger.

Alcaraz is a seven-time Grand Slam champion. He started the year strongly by winning the Australian Open and was aiming to secure a third straight title in Paris, having lifted the trophy in 2024. His withdrawal means he will miss the entire clay-court season, with focus now shifting to being fit for Wimbledon Championships in June. The last time he missed a major tournament was the 2023 Australian Open due to a leg injury.

A dominant force on clay, Alcaraz enjoyed a stellar run last season, winning titles in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Roland Garros, while finishing runner-up in Barcelona. His victory in last year's French Open final against arch rival Jannik Sinner was particularly memorable, as he saved three championship points in a marathon match lasting over five hours.

Alcaraz's absence could boost Sinner's chances of completing a Career Grand Slam. The Italian has already won multiple majors, including the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Reacting to the news after his win over Benjamin Bonzi in Madrid, Sinner said it was disappointing for the sport and wished
Alcaraz a speedy recovery, adding that he always relishes competing against the best players in the world.

The main draw of the French Open is set to begin on May 24.
