To contain the surge, Maharashtra government has announced new curbs that will stay in effect till April 30.
- Prohibitory orders under the Section 144, that bar gatherings of five or more people, will be in place throughout the day.
- Night curfew will be enforced from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily, when no one will be allowed to leave their homes—medical and other essential services stand excluded.
- A weekend lockdown will start from Friday 8 p.m. and be in place till Monday 7 a.m.

Authorities have administered nearly 8 crore vaccination shots since the inoculation drive began in January, with more than 16 lakh beneficiaries receiving the jab in just the last 24 hours. India is in the third phase of its immunisation programme where everyone above the age of 45 is eligible for the vaccine.
