A mammoth 130-foot asteroid is speeding towards Earth at enormous speed and it will come extremely close to our planet, reveals US space agency NASA. This is Asteroid 2025 DO27 and it is travelling at a speed of 34126 miles per hour. While the speed is very high, it is also set to get extremely close to Earth today, Saturday, March 15. In fact, it will be an uncomfortably close approach to Earth. NASA data, collected from various ground and space-based technologies shows that the asteroid will get to within just 4.1 mn miles (4,100,000) of Earth. To put things in perspective, this asteroid is as big as an airplane.
According to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Small-Body Database Lookup, Asteroid 2025 DO27 is an Apollo group asteroid and it has been labeled as a near-Earth asteroid on account of its close encounter with Earth. However, it has not been labelled as a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA). According to the definition, NEOs are asteroids (and comets) that come into Earth's neighborhood. These asteroids can be very small, as small as just a few feet, to massive, spread across miles. For instance, Apollo asteroid is 1500 metres across.
Asteroid 2025 DO27 is speeding at 34126 miles per hour when it makes its closest approach to Earth. Notably, it is not expected to deviate from its orbit and will fly by at the indicated distance.
When it flies by Earth, the asteroid will go past Venus on April 25, 2025. By then it would have slowed down considerably, reveals the Small-Body Database Lookup. Its Venus flyby will happen at 22071 mph.
