Amid the excitement of a new job, employees often neglect the timely transfer of their Employee Provident Fund (EPF) savings. This oversight, though, can prove costly. An EPF account left untouched for too long may be classified as inactive, and in some cases, may cease to earn interest altogether. That is why it is critical to ensure that the joining and exit dates of your employment are updated on your EPFO account.
Recently, the EPFO also spread the same message and said, “A small mistake in your Date of Joining or Exit can impact your future benefits. Don't ignore it… Check and correct your details today. Secure your PF and pension.”

According to EPFO, for accounts with Universal Account Number (UAN) generated after Oct. 1, 2017 and validated with Aadhaar, members can update details like name, date of birth, gender, marital status, and dates of joining/leaving directly online on their own without EPFO approval.
For this, the member will no longer have to upload any document. Members will be able to change their nationality on their own in two cases: one if this column is blank and the name needs to be changed to Indian; two if the name needs to be changed from Indian to International Worker.
For accounts with UAN generated before Oct. 1, 2017 and validated with Aadhaar, the change request will go online to EPFO through the employer, where it will be approved by the competent authority. Similarly, any change in joining and leaving dates will be made if it matches the contribution deposited in EPFO. In case of a mismatch, this change will be approved by the competent officer of EPFO.
Any modifications to a member's details in the latter case are subject to the employer's approval. The responsibility for processing such requests lies with the employer, and the member must initiate the process by filing an online joint declaration. Where an EPF account is tied to a UAN but remains unverified through Aadhaar, or in instances where no UAN has been issued, the correction process requires manual intervention. The same applies when a claim is being pursued on behalf of a deceased member.
In such cases, a physical joint declaration must be filled out and handed over to the employer. The employer uploads the document through their portal login, triggering a review process at the EPF office, where it is vetted and approved by a designated official. Should the employer be unable to complete the upload, the member or claimant must submit the form directly to the EPF office, where it is entered into the system by an official before receiving final approval.
