The seven water-supplying lakes of Mumbai are at nearly 90% capacity, holding a total of 12,91,877 million litres of water, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data showed on Monday. The current combined water level is in line with the past two years, when it stood at 89.10% and 79.25% capacity, respectively.

The seven lakes include Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Vihar and Tulsi and Middle Vaitarna. Individually, all lakes are above at least 80% capacity, except Vihar, which stands at 73%. Modak Sagar, which became the first lake to overflow, continued to be at its peak capacity of 1,28,925 million litres. Tansa and Middle Vaitarna lakes were also nearly full, holding above 95% of their capacity, the BMC data at 6 a.m. on Monday showed.

As rainfall continued to batter Mumbai, Thane and nearby regions, these lakes have been recording a continued surge in levels. In the past 24 hours, all lakes, except Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar, recorded an increase in levels. Rainfall data for the same period showed that all lakes, except Middle and Upper Vaitarna, received rain. The highest rainfall was recorded in Tulsi lake at 23 mm.

Water level at Upper Vaitarna stood at 82.98%. Modak Sagar reached its full capacity, while Tansa reached 98.57%. Among other lakes, water levels in Middle Vaitarna stood at 96.58%, Bhatsa at 86.14%, Vehar at 72.73% and Tulsi at 84.83%.

With more rain expected in the coming days, the water levels in these lakes will likely surge further.
