First-time MLA Rekha Gupta took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Feb. 20, marking the beginning of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the national capital after 27 years.

Several prominent leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal attended the grand ceremony, held at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.

BJP MLAs including Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood and Manjinder Singh Sirsa also took oath as cabinet ministers during the swearing-in ceremony.

With its return to power in Delhi, the BJP now directly governs 14 states and union territories in India. This number rises to 19 when including the chief ministers from its political alliance, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In the last six months, the BJP cemented its position as the most popular political party by retaining several key states, including Maharashtra and Haryana, and making significant gains in regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

Which States Have BJP Chief Ministers?

Some of the most highlighted CMs of BJP are Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam), Devendra Fadnavis (Maharashtra), and Pushkar Singh Dhami (Uttarakhand). Additionally, BJP CMs are also present in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Goa, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Two of the most prominent NDA CMs, Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) and Nitish Kumar (Bihar) played a key role as kingmakers in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, helping the BJP retain power at the Centre for a third consecutive term. Other NDA-ruled states are Sikkim and Meghalaya.

The BJP also governed Manipur, but the state was placed under the President’s Rule last week after N Biren Singh resigned from the CM’s post.

Which States Are Ruled By Congress?

The main opposition party Congress has CMs in Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana. Siddaramaiah returned as CM of Karnataka after Congress ousted the BJP government in the 2023 Assembly elections. Similarly, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu leads the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, while Telangana saw a change of guard in December 2023, with the Revanth Reddy-led government replacing Chandrashekar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

Which Other Opposition Parties Have CMs?

With Delhi's loss in the Feb. 5 elections, the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is now restricted to Punjab, where comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann is the CM. Newly sworn-in Delhi CM Rekha Gupta will join West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee as one of the only two women CMs in India.

Jharkhand Assembly elections 2024 saw Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha retain power. In Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin serves as the CM, leading the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leads Kerala.
