Zomato Chief Executive Officer Deepinder Goyal apologised for the platform charging a Rs 2 veg-mode enablement fee and said the charge would be removed on Friday itself.

Goyal replied to a LinkedIn post by a user calling it Zomato's "latest masterstroke". The CEO thanked the user for pointing it out.

"This is absolutely stupid on our part," he said. "I am super sorry for this. This charge will be removed today itself. Will also fix what's needed to fix in the team so that such s**t doesn’t happen again."

At 11:24 a.m., the platform was not showing veg-mode enablement fee on an order. It charged platform fee of Rs 10 and goods and services tax and restaurant charges.

The LinkedIn post was by Route To Market's assistant vice president of e-commerce, Rohit Ranjan. It said, "Being a vegetarian in India these days feels like curse! Zomato’s latest masterstroke—introducing an "extra charge" for the veg enablement fleet—has officially turned us into a premium subscription plan."

"So, fellow herbivores, brace yourselves! We’ve gone from "green and healthy" to "green and pricey." Thanks, Zomato, for proving once again that being veg is now a luxury tax!," it said.

To Goyal's reply, Ranjan said what truly surprised him during the journey was successfully driving the idea phase to execution while also securing stakeholder approval. "Bringing a vegetarian cruising concept in India was undoubtedly a bold and unconventional move," he said.
