Letterboxd has released its list of the Top 500 films of all time and only nine Indian titles have secured a place, standing out among entries from world cinemas.

Followed by millions of cinephiles, Letterboxd is an international film discovery and review platform where users can explore, rate and discuss movies. With its wide reach and open access, it hosts an extensive library that spans world cinema across genres, languages and eras.

The ranking, drawn from user ratings and strict eligibility rules, offers a snapshot of how world audiences are responding to cinema across languages and generations.

To qualify, a film had to be over 40 minutes in length and have a proper festival premiere, theatrical release or a professional streaming debut. Documentaries, self-released web films, TV series, recap edits and stage recordings were excluded. Each title also required a minimum of 25,000 ratings, making the list heavily performance-driven rather than curated by a jury.

The Indian presence is led by Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy — Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar — long considered the country's most influential contribution to world cinema. Their inclusion once again underlines the global impact of Ray's deeply human storytelling and his quiet, observational style that continues to resonate with modern viewers.

The remaining films reflect the range of Indian cinema across industries and eras.

SS Rajamouli's RRR represents the big-screen spectacle that travelled across continents and turned into a global theatrical event. Lijo Jose Pellissery's Kumbalangi Nights finds a spot for its nuanced writing and its refreshing portrayal of relationships and masculinity.

Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots stands out as a mainstream Hindi film that connected internationally with its take on education, ambition and friendship. Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur 2 brings in the cult crime-drama space with its raw, genre-bending narrative.

Among the newer entries, 12th Fail has been widely appreciated for its grounded, performance-driven storytelling and the strong message it conveys that failure is not the end, while Meiyazhagan underlines the global appeal of intimate, rooted storytelling, where revisiting one's past becomes a journey of healing and self-discovery.

Outside India, the list is dominated by internationally celebrated classics. Japanese cinema has a strong presence, with Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri taking the top position, followed by The Human Condition Part II. Timeless titles such as 12 Angry Men, Seven Samurai, The Godfather Part II, The Shawshank Redemption and City of God also feature in the top tier. The rankings also highlight the global popularity of anime, with films like Spirited Away, Perfect Blue and Grave of the Fireflies making the cut.

The list of nine entries shows that Indian cinema's identity lies in its diverse storytelling — from neorealism and grand spectacle to crime dramas and intimate character-driven narratives.
