The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won West Bengal Assembly elections for the first time in history, bagging 206 of the 294 seats, bringing an end to Mamata Banerjee's 15-year-rule in the state.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 81 seats, compared to 215 in 2021. A decade ago, the BJP had won only three seats in Bengal.

In the previous election, the BJP secured 77 seats. Apart from multiple senior TMC leaders and ministers who lost their seats, Mamata Banerjee also faced a setback in Bhabanipur constituency, where BJP's Suvendu Adhikari won by over 15,000 votes.

Overall, the BJP secured a vote share of about 46% compared to 41% for the TMC. Many constituencies witnessed tightly fought battles.

According to data from the Election Commission website, the lowest victory margin in West Bengal is likely to be seen in Rajarhat New Town, where counting is still in progress. TMC's Tapash Chatterjee is currently leading against BJP's Piyush Kanodia by just 309 votes. The final result is expected soon.

Several other constituencies have also witnessed close contests, with margins below 1,000 votes. In Satgachhia constituency, BJP's Agniswar Naskar won against TMC's Somashree Betal by 401 votes.
