It has been a rollercoaster ride in the Bhabanipur constituency. After trailing BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in early trends, TMC leader and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has clawed back into the lead.
The Bhabanipur is one of the closely watched constituencies in the West Bengal election, as leaders of both BJP and TMC are taking each other on. But early trends suggested that Adhikari was leading.
As per the latest data from ECI at 2 PM, Mamata Banerjee is leading the Bhabanipur constituency by a margin of over 12,000 votes. Adhikari Suvendu, who dropped to 2nd place, is well ahead of CPI's Shrijeeb Biswas with a margin of over 40,000 votes.
Adhikari, a former close aide of the Trinamool Congress leader, had dealt Banerjee a shock in the previous election, beating her by fewer than 2,000 votes at Nandigram. That narrow defeat forced the Trinamool chief to seek re-election from Bhabanipur to retain her Assembly seat.
A loss in Bhabanipur would be a devastating blow for Banerjee, who needs to retain her Assembly seat to continue as Chief Minister. Bhabanipur has been a Trinamool stronghold since 2011, when it was won by Subrata Bakshi. Before that, the constituency was known as the Kalighat seat, where Congress won three of four elections held there.
