After days of intense speculation, the Congress on Thursday named senior leader VD Satheesan as Kerala's next Chief Minister. The decision has brought an end to nearly 10 days of uncertainty over the party's leadership choice in the state.
The 61-year-old leader, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, emerged as the Congress high command's final pick amid internal discussions that also saw the names of KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala being considered for the top post.
A lawyer by profession, Satheesan began his electoral journey in 2001 after winning from North Paravur in Kerala's Ernakulam district. He has since retained the constituency for six straight terms and built a reputation as one of the Congress party's prominent faces in the state.

VD Satheesan's Net Worth: Movable Assets
In his election affidavit ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls, Satheesan declared a net worth of over Rs 6 crore which includes movable and immovable properties.
Satheesan and his family have declared movable assets worth over Rs 2.37 crore. The assets include cash holdings, bank deposits, gold jewellery, cooperative bank shares and vehicles.
Satheesan reported cash in hand of Rs 64,000 while his wife, Lakshmipriya, declared Rs 9,000. The affidavit also listed deposits across several banks and cooperative institutions that stood at more than Rs 73.6 lakh.
The Congress leader also disclosed shares worth Rs 25,000 in cooperative banking institutions. While no vehicle was listed in his own name, a Volkswagen Taigun registered in the name of a dependent was valued at around Rs 9.6 lakh.
Gold jewellery accounted for a significant share of the family's movable wealth. Satheesan declared 35 grams of gold worth around Rs 4.62 lakh while his wife reported ownership of 1,128 grams of gold valued at nearly Rs 1.49 crore. Together, the family's gold assets were estimated at more than Rs 1.53 crore.
Overall, Satheesan declared movable assets worth about Rs 57.2 lakh in his own name while assets exceeding Rs 1.7 crore were listed in his spouse's name.
VD Satheesan's Net Worth: Immovable Assets
The affidavit also revealed that Satheesan and his family own immovable assets worth more than Rs 4.27 crore.
Satheesan declared non-agricultural lands in Kanayannur and North Paravur taluks with a combined estimated market value of over Rs 2.17 crore.
His spouse separately declared agricultural land in Chengamanad village valued at around Rs 61 lakh. The affidavit noted that the land is jointly held with her sister and spans more than one acre. She also disclosed non-agricultural land in Nedumbassery village with an estimated value exceeding Rs 1.24 crore.
Apart from land holdings, Satheesan reported ownership of a residential house built in 2003 with a built-up area of 1,575 square feet. The property was valued at approximately Rs 25 lakh in the affidavit.
Overall, the Congress leader declared immovable assets worth about Rs 2.42 crore in his own name while properties worth nearly Rs 1.85 crore were listed in his spouse's name.
