Mughal-era mausoleum Taj Mahal generated a revenue of Rs 297 crore in the last five years through ticket sales, the most among Archaeological Survey of India-protected monuments.

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared the data in a written response to a query in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

He shared the data in a tabular form for cycles of financial years ranging from FY20 to FY24. According to the data, the Taj Mahal earned the top slot for all five years. In FY24, the monument earned nearly Rs 100 crore.

The data also showed that the Agra branch of the ASI spent Rs 23.52 crore for the conservation and development of monuments in the area which covers the Taj Mahal.

The Mughal-era architectural wonder was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century and it is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

In FY24, Qutub Minar earned Rs 23.8 crore in ticket sales, followed by Red Fort. Both monuments are located in Delhi.

In total, Rs 443.53 crore has been spent for the conservation, preservation, and environmental development of protected monuments in the financial year 2023-24. It was higher than Rs 391.93 crore spent the year before and Rs 269.57 in FY22.
