The police are watching—that's the message from Mumbai's special cell to prevent crime against women and children.
The Mumbai Police on Jan. 26 this year launched the Nirbhaya Squad—called so after the name given to the victim of 2012 gruesome sexual assault in Delhi.
The squad has three main objectives: safety, empowerment, awareness. All the 94 police stations in the city have members of the squad working round the clock in two shifts.
Each squad comprises one lady officer, two lady constables and one male driver of the dedicated mobile van that is equipped to receive emergency calls. The vans help in attending to the SOS calls faster, Constable Vrushali Kadam, part of the Nirbhaya Squad at the Colaba Police Station, told BloombergQuint. Earlier, it took time to act, but they reach the place of incident faster as they now receive calls directly on their assigned phones, she said.
The squad's purpose is not limited to just reaching the spot of the crime on time or nabbing the perpetrator. "It's important to tell the perpetrators that you're being watched,” Payal Pardeshi, a police sub-inspector and part of the squad at the Colaba Police Station, said. “You are always under surveillance, like on CCTV cameras, and if you do anything wrong, you'll be reported to the police."
