As people continue to protest against the killing of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while defying curfew-like restrictions imposed by authorities on third consecutive, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday decided to keep the mobile internet services operating at restricted speed, till further orders.

Khamenei was killed in the United States-Israel strikes on February 28 in Tehran. Following his killing, hundreds of thousands marched towards Lal Chowk in Srinagar, where they held protests against the killing.

Mobile internet services across Kashmir will continue to operate at reduced 2G speeds as a precautionary measure, while prepaid mobile calling services will remain suspended until further orders, reported IANS.

As a precautionary step, the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department ordered “temporary” curtailment of mobile internet services and calling services on prepaid mobile phones. SMS services have also been suspended.

“The internet services have been reduced to 2G on mobile devices,” an official in the administration said.

The authorities have now decided to keep the curbs in place for an unknown period of time.

Meanwhile, schools in the Valley, which were supposed to open on March 1 after a 3-month long winter vacation, have been ordered to remain closed till March 7.

Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, has said that the decision to keep the educational institutions closed was taken to ensure the safety of the students.

“We have decided to keep the colleges, schools and universities shut till March 7,” she said, adding that the government was closely monitoring the situation for it to be able to take a future call on the opening of the educational institutes.

Meanwhile, Srinagar police have filed FIRs against National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament, Agha Ruhullah Mehdi, and former Srinagar Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattoo.

They have been booked for allegedly circulating false, fabricated, and misleading content on digital and social media platforms.

Mehdi is a Shia leader and quite a vocal critic of the government, including his own party in the state.

According to police, credible inputs indicated that the content was disseminated with the intent to create fear, disturb public order, and incite unlawful activities.
