India is set to witness a mix of intense rainfall, thunderstorms and rising temperatures across several regions on May 8, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued multiple weather alerts for the second consecutive day amid an active pre-monsoon phase. The interaction between intense heat and incoming moisture is expected to trigger unstable and contrasting weather conditions across the country.
Strong Winds, Thunderstorms In North India
Uttarakhand is expected to face thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are also forecast across parts of northern plains, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Northeast, East, Southern India, To See Continued Rainfall Activity
The IMD said scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is expected to continue across Northeast India till May 9, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh on May 12 and 13, and over Assam and Meghalaya during the same period. In East India, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand may witness strong thunderstorms with gusts touching 70 kmph between May 9 and 10.
Southern states are likely to remain under prolonged wet weather conditions over the next several days. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Interior Karnataka are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema are also likely to experience gusty winds and scattered showers through the week.
Heatwave Conditions Likely In Some parts of India
Meanwhile, temperatures are forecast to rise gradually across large parts of Northwest and Central India. Maximum temperatures may increase by 3-4 degrees Celsius over Northwest India till May 10, while Maharashtra and Northeast India could see a rise of up to 5 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
The IMD has also warned of heatwave conditions over Gujarat and West Rajasthan between May 9 and 13. Konkan and Goa are likely to continue experiencing hot and humid weather conditions through May 9. No fishermen warning has been issued at present.
