The Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially set plans in motion to update its aging fleet of VIP transport aircraft by releasing a ‘request for information' (RFI) for 4-6 new Long Range Business Jets (LRBJs), designed for the secure, swift, and dependable conveyance of military leaders and government officials.

What is RFI and its purpose

The RFI, serving as the initial step to pinpoint potential suppliers and grasp the technologies on hand before commencing a formal acquisition, seeks to modernise the Air Headquarters Communication Squadron located at Palam, Delhi. The existing fleet of four Embraer Legacy 600 jets has been in service for over two decades and is scheduled for a gradual replacement.

In order to identify potential vendors that can execute the specified project, OEMs and authorised vendors are encouraged to submit details regarding the products they can provide,” the RFI published on the IAF website stated “The LRBJs will be used for VIP role with passenger carrying capacity of minimum 19 passengers,” according to TOI.

However, the LRBJs differ from the aircraft designated solely for India's top three VVIPs: the President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, referred to by the call sign ‘Air India One,' are uniquely modified, secure, and exclusive jets for these top three VVIPs.

Conversely, the LRBJ aircraft are intended for the transport of senior government officials, including the ministers of defense, finance, home affairs, and external affairs, alongside the leaders of the Indian Army, Navy, and IAF.

On Sept. 21, 2005, four Embraer Legacy 600 executive jets were incorporated into the Air Headquarters Communication Squadron of the IAF, with three aircraft delivered at first and the fourth arriving a few months later. The planes were designated Meghdoot, Vayudoot, Nabhdoot, and Gagandoot, and have since been utilized for VIP and communication roles.

The current Embraer fleet necessitates a take-off distance of 1,800 meters and a landing distance of 1,400 meters, enabling operations from most airfields in India and abroad. The jets come equipped with self-defense systems to protect against missile threats.
