The government has clarified that the latest changes to the Agnipath Scheme will apply only to nine batches of Agniveers currently serving in the armed forces. Fresh recruits inducted after December 2026 will continue under the original four year engagement model. The clarification comes amid questions over whether the government's decision to extend the service period of Agniveers marked a permanent shift in the military recruitment scheme.
Defence officials have stated that the changes are limited to personnel already inducted into the armed forces. The rules for future batches will be reviewed separately, depending on the operational requirements of the armed forces. The latest announcement was made by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday, introducing an additional two year engagement period for Agniveers who would otherwise exit after completing their initial four years of service.

What all changes for the 9 batches of Agniveers?
Under the revised arrangement, the existing provision allowing 25 percent of each batch to enter the regular cadre after four years will remain unchanged. The remaining 75 percent of Agniveers, who would earlier have been discharged after completing their four year tenure, will now be eligible for an additional two year engagement.
At the end of this extended period, they will be absorbed into the regular cadre without any numerical cap, subject to certain conditions. NDTV reported that the extension will be available to Agniveers who are willing to continue serving, meet the prescribed physical fitness standards and maintain a clean disciplinary record. The arrangement effectively creates a six year pathway to regular military service for eligible Agniveers from the nine batches currently in uniform.
Will all Agniveers be absorbed into the regular cadre?
The revised framework removes the earlier ceiling on the number of Agniveers who could be retained after completing their initial four-year engagement. However, absorption into the regular cadre will not be automatic.
The first 25 per cent of each batch will continue to be considered for regular service after four years. Those in the remaining 75 per cent will have to complete the additional two-year engagement before being absorbed. Their willingness to continue, physical fitness and disciplinary record will determine their eligibility, NDTV reported.
Agniveer's Seniority: What happens after six years?
The revised arrangement also addresses concerns regarding the seniority of Agniveers who enter the regular cadre after completing the additional two years. According to the clarification reported by NDTV, personnel absorbed after the six-year engagement will be placed immediately after their batchmates who entered the regular cadre at the four-year mark. Their delayed absorption will not result in them being placed below regular soldiers from subsequent batches.
The government has maintained that the changes do not amount to a rollback of the Agnipath scheme. The original framework, which provides for a four-year engagement period and the retention of up to 25 per cent of each batch, remains intact.
The additional two-year engagement is being treated as a transitional arrangement for the nine batches already serving in the armed forces. The revised provisions expand the opportunity for existing Agniveers to join the regular cadre without changing the initial terms of recruitment.
What happens to Agniveers recruited after December 2026?
Agniveers inducted after December 2026 will continue to serve under the original four-year model, NDTV reported. The government has indicated that the rules applicable to future batches could be reviewed later, depending on the requirements of the armed forces and prevailing circumstances.
The clarification is significant for prospective recruits, many of whom may have interpreted the earlier announcement as a permanent extension of the Agnipath service period from four years to six years. For now, the government has drawn a clear distinction between Agniveers already serving and those who will be inducted in the future.
While the revised arrangement allows the armed forces to retain trained personnel for a longer period, the four-year engagement model will continue to govern fresh recruitment after December 2026. Whether the additional two-year engagement will eventually become a permanent feature of the Agnipath scheme remains undecided.
