India’s Sugar Production For 2024-25 Estimated To Fall 19%: AISTA
India’s largest sugar producing state, Maharashtra, is expected to produce 80 lakh tonnes of the sugar, down from 83 lakh tonne in the earlier estimate.
According to the All-India Sugar Trade Association, sugar production for the 2024-25 season is estimated to reach 258 lakh tonnes, lower than the previous estimate of 265 lakh tonnes, a drop of 7.2 lakh tonne from its earlier estimate. In the previous season, sugar production was 319 lakh tonnes.
With the revised estimate, sugar production is expected to fall by 19% to 25.8 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season ending September, according to the All-India Sugar Trade Association's second estimate released on Tuesday.
AISTA's downward revision is attributed to reduced output in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

The decline is due to factories in Maharashtra having closed earlier than expected. Same for Tamil Nadu, with sugar production down by 4 lakh tonne to 6 lakh tonne from the earlier estimate of 10 lakh tonne.
Diversion of sucrose for ethanol production is expected to be 38 lakh tonnes from an earlier estimate of 40 lakh tonnes.

Based on the revised estimates, The balance for the current season has also been revised, as opening stocks are expected at 79.8 lakh tonnes. Total sugar availability is estimated at 337.8 lakh tonnes, exceeding domestic consumption of 290 lakh tonnes. Exports are projected at 10 lakh tonnes, with closing stocks of 37.8 lakh tonnes expected.
