US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would visit China after an invitation during a call with his counterpart Xi Jinping.

"We had a really good conversation. He invited me to China and I invited him... We both accepted. I will be going there with the first lady at some point and he will be coming here," Trump told reporters in the White House.

Trump also said US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will soon hold talks with Chinese officials to iron out trade issues.

Wall Street reacted positively, with the three benchmark indices rising. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones were trading 0.3% higher while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite popped 0.5%

US-China relations have soured in recent weeks, with both sides accusing the other of violating a trade pact agreed in Geneva that brought down tariffs from massive highs.

The Trump-Xi phone call was their first known formal contact since the US leader took office in January. The last conversation between Trump and Xi took place in January before the US president's inauguration, as per a Bloomberg report.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the call was initiated at Trump's request.
