A UK airline has cancelled flights between Cornwall and London, as the upsurge in fuel prices due to the ongoing Middle East war disturbed the oil supply globally. Skybus, the aviation agency, announced the termination of the operational daily service between London Gatwick and Newquay, unprecedentedly this morning.
The Managing Director of Skybus, Jonathan Hinckley, clarified that a number of reasons forced the air company to take the decision. He explained that amidst global economic instability, rising fuel prices, and a sharp drop in passenger bookings were among the primary reasons. He said, as per media reports, “At a time of great economic uncertainty and steps being taken to conserve energy worldwide, it is neither environmentally nor economically sound for us to continue flying with vastly reduced passenger numbers.”
The Cornwall Airport Newquay spokesperson reportedly said, “We are actively working with airline partners to secure sustainable London connectivity for the future.”
The company initiated services over the route in November 2025 after Eastern Airways went into administration, and it was scheduled to end on May 31. The ongoing conflict became the cause of the early cessation, two months ahead of schedule. The airline will provide full refunds to affected passengers.
With flight times of roughly one hour and 20 minutes and fares starting at £79.99 each way, this route offered a faster, more affordable alternative to the train, which requires a five-hour journey with a transfer. Ryanair operates year-round flights connecting Newquay and London Stansted, while EasyJet is scheduled to launch its own new route to Newquay beginning June 23.
Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has predicted chaos for travellers in the coming summer: “We don't expect any disruption until early May, but if the war continues, we do run the risk of supply disruptions in Europe in May and June.”
