The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), Iran's recently formed maritime regulatory authority, has formally opened an X account. Iran's Supreme National Security Council announced the activation on May 18, 2026, and confirmed that the account (@PGSA_IRAN) will be used to broadcast regulations, coordination specifications, and real-time updates pertaining to passage across the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
In its initial post on Monday, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) stated that "real-time updates on the #Hormuz_Strait operations and latest developments" would be provided on the website.

It happened about two weeks after Press TV initially revealed that Iran had introduced a new nautical system for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Any nautical transit through the Strait of Hormuz's authorised bounds without its express consent is now considered "illegal," according to the PGSA's initial posts.
To get a transit permit, commercial vessels must send comprehensive operational data via email (info@pgsa.ir), including crew manifests, insurance policies, cargo declarations, and anticipated routes.
The authority has severely restricted US ships, outlawed the transit of any military equipment thought to be antagonistic to Iran, and outright blacklisted all ships with ties to Israel.
Previously handling over 20% of the world's oil and LNG trade, the online activation of the PGSA formalises a hotly debated system to exert ultimate authority over the waterway.

Iran is using this body as a virtual "toll booth," according to reports monitored by international monitoring organisations. Some stranded carriers have already paid upwards of $2 million in Chinese yuan per transit to clear passage.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, which retains direct tactical control over the strait, uses the X account and the underlying authority as its administrative and public interface.

Financial and legal organizations, such as the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), have already formally warned that any international organizations or individuals who cooperate with these toll payments risk harsh international penalties.
