A sudden power failure at a key pumping station triggered a major pipeline burst in Karachi, disrupting water supply to several parts of the city and deepening an already fragile civic situation, The Express Tribune reported.

As per the report, the incident occurred late Tuesday when electricity supply to the Dhabeji pumping station was interrupted, forcing multiple pumps to shut down abruptly. Officials said the sudden halt caused a sharp fluctuation in pressure within the transmission system, leading to the rupture of a 72-inch main pipeline.

The burst resulted in the loss of large quantities of water and caused localised flooding, while severely affecting supply lines feeding multiple residential zones. Several densely populated areas — including Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and parts of District Central — have been left facing acute shortages.

Authorities said water supply to the affected localities is likely to remain suspended for 24 to 48 hours. Residents have been advised to conserve available water, even as demand for private water tankers is expected to surge during the disruption.

Emergency repair work was launched soon after the incident, with technical teams working to contain the damage and restore operations. Officials noted that while the damaged pipeline could be fixed within a day, full restoration of supply would take longer due to the need for gradual normalisation of pressure in the system to prevent further ruptures.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation said repeated power outages at the Dhabeji facility continue to pose a serious challenge to the city's water distribution network.

Karachi has witnessed a series of similar incidents in recent weeks, with ageing pipelines and unreliable electricity supply contributing to frequent disruptions. Experts have warned that without sustained investment in infrastructure upgrades and better coordination between utility services, such crises are likely to recur.

For residents, the latest outage adds to recurring hardships, underscoring the pressing need for long-term solutions to ensure a stable and reliable water supply in the country's largest city.
