At least three people were injured in a Thai school, where a gunman had taken an unknown number of students and teachers hostage, reports said on Wednesday.
The gunman has been detained, and there are no hostages as of now, the local administration took to social media confirm, Sky News reported. The incident took place in Songkhla province of southern Thailand on Wednesday afternoon. The report of the incident was given by the provincial administration on social media.
“A gunman has entered a school and has taken an unknown number of students and teachers hostage,” the provincial administration reported, adding that it was the Patong Prethankiriwat School in Hat Yai District of the province.
Following the incident, the administration updated and said that the hostage situation has been diffused and the gunman has been detained. “There are no hostages now,” the administration declared.
A police officer, however, confirmed to Sky News that three people were injured in the incident. The identities of the injured and their current status were not known while this report was being filed.
The suspect is an 18-year-old man and is now under detention and is being questioned, the administration has told Reuters.
Gun Violence and ownership are not rare in Thailand. In 2022, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife attack at a nursery in the country's east.
