OpenAI has set its sight on artificial general intelligence, or AGI, a kind of AI that can perform human-like thinking across a wide range of functions. To achieve that, the ChatGPT maker is expected to announce an AI model soon. OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently shared insights into the upcoming model, internally known as Spud, during an appearance on the Big Technology podcast. It is expected to serve as a base model for building other AI models in the future.

What Is OpenAI's Spud And How Capable Will It Be?

In the podcast, Brockman confirmed the flagship model's existence but didn't give any specific performance benchmarks or an exact launch schedule. He added that Spud will be a “big model” offering gains in power and usability.

According to Brockman, Spud is not a minor update but an entirely new base model for ChatGPT. It will support the development of all future models. He described it as the result of nearly two years of research and a significant step in OpenAI's push towards AGI.

“I think it's going to be able to solve both much harder problems. I think it will be much more nuanced. It'll understand instructions better. It'll understand the context much better. There's this thing called big model smell that people talk about, where it's just like there's something about when these models are actually much smarter, much more capable, that they bend to you much more.”

Spud is expected to offer notably stronger reasoning abilities and more natural, intuitive responses compared to existing models. It will reportedly have the capacity to understand user intent rapidly and accurately, which means users won't have to input multiple prompts for the same request. As a result, users may find it much easier to handle intricate tasks.

As per Brockman, human-AI interactions that once caused frustration among users will soon become simple enough that users will turn to AI “without thinking very much.” He expressed strong enthusiasm about how this development raises the bar about what is possible with AI.

Brockman also added that OpenAI now has a clear view towards AGI and anticipates it could emerge within the next few years.
