In a bid to streamline everyday workflows, Gemini has introduced a fresh capability that could enhance efficiency. Revealed on Wednesday, the AI tool can now generate files within the chat itself when prompted.
“You can now ask Gemini to create Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and more directly in your chat. No more copying, pasting, or reformatting, just prompt and download. Available globally for all Gemini users,” Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X.

Previously, depending on the task, Gemini could produce a document within the chat, but users were required to manually transfer it into their preferred software. This often involved additional effort to adjust formatting.

“Instead of copying, pasting and reformatting, this update will allow you to easily move your work into different applications... For most formats, you can then directly download the file to your device or export to Drive,” Google said in a blog post.
Formats that Gemini supports include Workspace files (Docs, Sheets and Slides), .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .csv, LaTeX, Plain Text (TXT), Rich Text Format (RTF) and Markdown (MD).
While a direct Microsoft PowerPoint export option is still absent, users can work around this by exporting to Google Slides before downloading the presentation as a PPT file.
With the latest enhancement, Gemini responds to straightforward prompts like “Turn this summary into a PDF” or “Save this budget as an Excel sheet”. It manages the entire task and delivers a file that can be downloaded instantly or exported to Google Drive.
The company says the update is beginning to roll out to all Gemini users. For those who do not see it yet, it is likely part of a gradual deployment and will arrive in due course.
The move does not place Google at the forefront of file export functionality in AI. Anthropic's Claude chatbot has offered similar features, including the ability to generate and modify Excel files, since September last year.
Even so, the update is expected to be well-received by frequent Gemini users.
According to Android Central, the update marks a significant step forward, though Google has been surprisingly restrained in its promotion. Given the strong demand for such a feature since Gemini's launch, its low-key introduction via a blog post may strike some as underwhelming.
