In a historic first, India will host the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, marking a definitive shift in the country's global sporting ambitions, with Odisha emerging as the keystone of that vision.

The announcement was made by the Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo, who also revealed that the global competition will be held at Bhubaneswar's state-of-the-art indoor stadium in Kalinga.

The decision to pick India as hosts was confirmed by Sebastian Coe following a World Athletics Council meeting in Toruń, Poland, on Thursday, ahead of the 2026 World Indoor Athletics Championships, which begins on Friday.

India was announced as the 2028 hosts, while Kazakhstan was awarded the 2030 edition, with Astana as host city.

The Stadium At The Centre Of The Bid

At the core of India's winning bid is the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium in Bhubaneswar, a venue that reflects the country's vastly improved sports infrastructure.

Completed in 2024, the stadium is the largest of its kind in South Asia and features a Category 1-certified 200m synthetic track, meeting top-tier international standards.

The track received the World Athletics Indoor Facility Certification in December 2024, becoming the first track in the country to receive this recognition.

Beyond Hosting: A Strategic Signal

This is the first time India will host a senior-level World Athletics Championship, moving beyond multi-sport events like the 2010 Commonwealth Games into a truly global single-discipline event.

The successful bid also highlights the structured approach led by the Odisha government, often referred to as the “Odisha Model”, which represents a sustained investment in sports infrastructure and event hosting.

A high-level inspection team assessed the venue in January 2026 and reported that the city met key benchmarks across logistics, accommodation, and athlete facilities.

Bhubaneswar's track record includes staging the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, strengthening its credibility with international federations.  In a test run for 2028, the venue is set to host the first National Indoor Athletics Championships from March 24, 2026.

Step-Up in Hosting Ambition For India

India's only previous global athletics hosting assignment was the 2004 World Half Marathon organised in Delhi. The 2028 World Indoor Championships represents a clear escalation in scale, positioning India as a serious contender in the global athletics ecosystem.

Started in 1985, the World Indoor Athletics Championships is a biennial track and field competition. The 2028 meet will be its 22nd edition, making India only the fourth Asian nation to host the Championships.
