With high-level meetings taking place behind closed doors, the suspense continues to build as to whether or not the India-Pakistan game will go forward.

Whenever an ICC tournament comes around, few fixtures carry the weight, history and global attention of an India-Pakistan encounter. With bilateral series between the two nations abandoned since 2012, this rivalry has been confined to multi-nation tournaments for over a decade, turning every clash into a high-stakes and even higher-viewership spectacle.

Why Was This Game Abandoned?

On Feb. 1, a post issued by the Government of Pakistan's official X account, announced that while the government had granted permission to the Pakistan team to travel to Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup 2026, there was a little caveat. Simply put, "the Pakistan cricket team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on Feb. 15 against India."

A couple of days later, the Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif himself would go on to reiterate this decision explaining further that this decision was taken in the interest of keeping “politics out of sports.” Speaking to his cabinet, the Pakistan PM explained that the decision was taken in solidarity with Bangladesh being kicked out of the tournament.

Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the tournament after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) asked for their games to be shifted to Sri Lanka (co-hosts for the tournament) citing security concerns in India for their fans and players. The ICC rejected this request, declaring there was an “absence of any credible security threat” and gave the BCB 24 hours to confirm participation, following which they picked the next best qualifier.

The Fallout From This Decision

Pakistan's announcement that it will boycott the India match sent ripples far beyond the pitch. Pakistan's government directive not to play India has thrown cricket's most lucrative fixture into uncertainty, prompting the ICC to question the PCB's rationale under tournament participation rules, including any attempt to invoke force majeure as justification.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has publicly urged the PCB to reconsider, warning that cancelling the fixture could have serious economic consequences for the host nation and local stakeholders who have already invested in security, logistics and tourism linked to the high-profile game.

What We Know So Far: The Talks, And The Demands

Multiple outlets have reported that a high-level meeting involving PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, his BCB counterpart Aminul Islam and ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja took place on Sunday, Feb. 8 to explore a way forward.

Reports in the media suggest that the PCB has raised broader grievances during these discussions, including issues related to revenue sharing and long-term bilateral cricket with India. These are structural demands that are unlikely to be resolved within the narrow window of an ongoing World Cup.

According to media reports, the following demands have been laid out to the ICC by the PCB:

1) Increased compensation for Bangladesh Cricket Board.
2) Participation fee for BCB despite not being part of the World Cup.
3) Hosting rights for an ICC event in future.

Latest Developments: Government-Level Consultations

The latest updates indicate that PCB chairman Naqvi is expected to brief or meet Pakistan PM Sharif to seek final political clearance on whether the team can take the field against India.

On the Indian side, the BCCI has maintained that it will follow the ICC's guidance on the matter. India captain Suryakumar Yadav has publicly stated that the team is preparing as scheduled, with travel and logistical plans in place, underlining that from India's perspective, the match is being treated as "on", unless officially called off.

Will They Play?

As things stand, the India versus Pakistan match remains on the fixture list, but the uncertainty surrounding Pakistan's participation has cast a shadow over what is typically the centrepiece of any World Cup schedule.

With the ICC mediating, the PCB seeking political clearance, and the tournament clock ticking, the coming days are likely to determine whether fans get the rivalry they have been waiting for or it will be another reminder of how geopolitics continues to intrude on cricket's biggest stage.
