Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi is set to become India's next Chief of Army Staff, taking over from the current General Manoj Pande. The government made the announcement on Tuesday night, putting an end to the speculation surrounding this significant appointment.

Dwivedi, who holds extensive operational expertise along the borders with China and Pakistan, currently holds the position of Vice Chief of the Army Staff. General Pande is scheduled to retire on June 30. The government followed the seniority principle in the succession.

"The government has appointed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of June 30," the defence ministry said.

In an unusual decision, the government recently prolonged General Pande's term by an additional month, just six days prior to his retirement on May 31. This action led to speculation that Dwivedi might not be selected for the prominent position.

The seniormost official after Lt Gen Dwivedi is Lt Gen Ajay Kumar Singh, the Southern Army Commander. Both Lt Gen Dwivedi and Lt Gen Ajay Kumar Singh were slated to retire on June 30 as well.

The three service chiefs can serve till the age of 62 or for three years, whichever is earlier. The retirement age of Lt General rank officers is 60 unless the officer is approved for the four-star rank.
