Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall starting Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in its latest bulletin. According to the IMD bulletin on Dec. 12, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are very likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Dec. 12, 13, 16 and 17 due to the northeast monsoon spell that is entering its next phase.
“Thunderstorm with intermittent spells of heavy rain is likely to occur in some areas,” the Chennai Met Office said in a bulletin at 11:30 am on Thursday.
“The well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar and neighbourhood. The associated upper-air cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards South Tamil Nadu and weaken gradually during the next 12 hours,” the IMD said in its all-India forecast on the day.
Chennai, Madurai, Cuddalore, Coimbatore and other areas are set to witness heavy rainfall on Thursday. On the other hand, districts like Thanjavur are likely to see very heavy rains on Thursday.

The IMD issued an orange alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Thursday, including Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai.
Yellow Alert For Chennai, Kancheepuram And More
The met department issued a yellow alert for Chennai on Thursday.
The areas that are under yellow alert for the day include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
On Friday, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu will be under yellow alert.
Schools Closed In Chennai, 10 Other Districts
According to a report by news agency ANI, schools in 11 districts across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, declared a holiday on Thursday due to rains.
Schools in Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur will remain closed on the day.
