The Indian Railways on Monday hiked fares for certain passenger trains from July 1, according to an official notification.

Prices for non-AC mail/express trains have been increased by 1 paisa per kilometre from July. AC-class passengers will see a hike of 2 paise per kilometre in ticket prices, the notification stated.

However, the new fare structure will not have any impact on suburban tickets. The notification confirms NDTV's report on the hike in railway prices from July 1.

For ordinary non-suburban for distances exceeding 500 km for the second class, the ticket fare will be hiked by Rs 5 for distance of 501 km to 1,500 km and Rs 10 for a distance of 1,501 km to 2,500 km. The price will be further hiked by Rs 15 for the distance of 2,501 to 3,000 km. For the ordinary non-AC trains, non-suburban for sleeper class and first class the price will be hiked by half paise per kilometre.

The monthly season ticket will continue to be available at old rates. "In case of tickets already issued at pre-revised rates, the revised fare shall not be applicable on such tickets," the notification added.

Earlier in June, Indian Railways announced the need for mandatory Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal train bookings from July 1. It said that the move will benefit the common end users. The ministry has announced that passengers will need to use Aadhaar-based OTP verification for Tatkal bookings from July 15.

The new rules stipulate limitations for authorised booking agents when it comes to making Tatkal bookings. The booking agents are prevented from booking Tatkal tickets on the first day during the initial half-hour. For AC-class bookings, this restriction is applicable from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. For non-AC bookings, the timing is from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
