In his 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on India to strengthen its internal capabilities in response to rising global economic protectionism. Addressing the nation on its 79th Independence Day, Modi emphasised self-reliance, innovation, and strategic preparedness as key pillars to India's future.

"As economic protectionism rises in the world, we will face those challenges and make ourselves capable. Only if we expand our capabilities will the world recognise our power," PM Modi said.

"India will not compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. Modi will stand as a wall against any policy that undermines their interests," he added.

Modi's remarks came after newly introduced trade barriers and tariff policies by the US under President Donald Trump.

In his speech, PM said Independence Day is a festival of pride and a celebration of our collective achievements. He urged the people of the nation to stay vigilant in their pursuit of independence stating, "Dependence is very tricky. One must stay vigilant to become independent and stay atmanirbhar."

Highlighting local manufacturing in India's defense capabilities, Modi praised the success of Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the terror attack in Pahalgam and said locally maufactured weapons demonstrated strong performance in Operation Sindoor. "Had India not been atmanirbhar, the response would not have been seamless", he said.
