August has around 15 bank holidays due to festivals and weekends, including Independence Day, Parsi New Year and Janmashtami, leading to limited banking operations.
August is expected to be one of the least busy months for banks, with approximately 15 holidays scheduled due to weekends and festivals. Banks will remain closed across many states due to festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar.
This week itself has multiple public holidays, resulting in a long weekend in many states. Banks will remain closed on August 15 on account of Independence Day 2025.
The following day August 16, is a Saturday, and will be a holiday in many states due to Janmashtami. Typically, banks remain closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as per the RBI holiday calendar. However, the central bank is empowered to declare additional closures on Saturdays for festivals or special events. Banks remain closed on all Sundays across the country.
Banks will also remain closed in Manipur for an additional day this week due to a public holiday in the state. The northeastern state observes Patriots’ Day on August 13, which will lead to the closure of public institutions, including banks and government offices in the state.
Customers should plan financial transactions accordingly. If you plan to visit bank branches, it is advisable to confirm the timings of the local branches. While banking services at the branches will remain suspended on holidays, online services will continue as usual. For instance, ATM services, UPI, net banking and other online transactions will be available during the holidays too.
