- S&P 500 dropped 0.8%, Nasdaq 100 declined 0.9%, Dow Jones down 0.7% amid Treasury selloff
- Asian stocks slipped 0.3%, Japanese shares rose; US-China trade truce extended during Xi's visit
Good Morning!
The Gift Nifty was trading around 23,280 level, a discount of nearly 170 points from the Nifty futures' previous close indicating negative open for the benchmark Nifty 50. The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex rose 0.50% and 0.40% respectively. US and European index futures are trading lower during Asian trading hours.
- S&P 500 futures trade 0.75% lower.
- Euro Stoxx 50 futures trade 0.38% down.
US Market Wrap
Stocks joined bonds lower as a rally in oil prices stoked worries about inflationary pressures, which were further reinforced by data showing US business activity jumped at the fastest pace since 2021. The decline in equities sent the S&P 500 down from near-record levels. A selloff in Treasuries deepened after a weak $70 billion sale of five-year notes that drove yields on most maturities to almost two-decade highs. The dollar climbed against all major currencies.

The S&P 500 fell 0.8% as of 4 p.m. New York time, The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7%, according to Bloomberg.
Asian Market Wrap
Asian bonds fell, tracking losses on Wall Street as rising oil prices and stronger-than-expected US economic data fueled inflation concerns and bets on further interest-rate hikes. Asian stocks slipped 0.3%, while Japanese stocks edged higher as markets in Tokyo reopened after a three-day holiday. Chinese stocks will also be in focus after the US and China extended their trade truce by two months as President Xi Jinping landed in America for his first state visit in 11 years.
Japanese stocks look poised to catch up with a global AI-led rally when trading resumes on Thursday, while a weaker yen keeps currency intervention risk in focus. Nikkei 225 futures traded in Osaka were about 1.4% higher than where the underlying gauge settled on Friday.
Commodity Check
Gold held a decline as resurgent energy prices and stronger-than-expected US economic data increased bets the Federal Reserve might again raise interest rates to combat inflation. Bullion was trading around $4,290 an ounce, after falling 1.7% the day before. Spot gold edged up 0.1% to $4,290.29 an ounce at 8:08 a.m. in Singapore. Silver was 0.2% lower at $64.31 an ounce after sliding 4% in the previous session. Platinum and palladium edged lower.
Copper retreated from close to a record as an upswing in oil prices and strong US economic data stoked concerns about higher US interest rates. The metal dropped 0.9% to close at $14,618 a ton on the London Metal Exchange, marking its first daily decline since Sep. 14. Aluminum and zinc also edged lower.
Oil steadied after surging on renewed tensions between the US and Iran, with a defiant message from President Masoud Pezeshkian highlighting the still-wide gap between the two sides. Brent held below $103 a barrel after climbing almost 4% in the midweek session, while West Texas Intermediate was near $92.
Stock Market Recap
The Nifty 50 settled 117.80 points, or 0.50%, higher at 23,446.80, gaining 15.45 points from its provisional close. The Sensex ended 297.68 points, or 0.40%, higher at 74,826.76, adding 32.15 points from the provisional close.
