The Indian stock market benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, traded higher on Wednesday, extending its rally to the fifth straight session, led by buying in auto, metals and realty stocks.
The BSE Sensex was up over 200 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 traded above 23,900 level. Bank Nifty index gained half a percent.
Broader markets outperformed the frontliers, as the Nifty Smallcap 100 and the Nifty Midcap 100 indices traded over 1% higher each.

Globally, investors reacted to the US midterm election results 2026, with Democrats projected to seize control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, in a major blow to President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, crude oil prices resumed their upward move after declining for two consecutive sessions, as investors assessed the uncertainty surrounding peace negotiations between the US and Iran. Brent crude was around $104 a barrel.
Investors will also track developments in the ongoing geopolitical conflicts, along with the latest corporate earnings announcements, for further cues on the domestic market.
Stock Market LIVE: Sensex Gains 302 Points, Nifty 50 Above 23,900; CAS Underway
The Indian stock market extended its rally to the fifth consecutive session on Wednesday, led by gains in FMCG and auto stocks.
At 3:15 PM, the Sensex gained 301.80 points, or 0.39%, to 77,219.65, while the Nifty 50 was up 100.85 points, or 0.42%, to 23,911.70. The Closing Auction Session (CAS) is underway.
Stock Market LIVE: Rupee Strengthens For Fourth Straight Session
The rupee extended its winning streak to a fourth straight session, rising 14 paise to 94.61 against the dollar in early trade and touching 94.50 before hovering near 94.74 by afternoon.
What changed today is that US midterm election trends and a retreat in global oil are doing the heavy lifting that the RBI had to do alone in October. A divided US Congress is cooling the dollar index toward 101.17 and pulling US bond yields lower, while Brent crude near $102.50 and Rs 6,837 crore in Tuesday foreign stock buying have turned previous headwinds into tailwinds, said Rajeev Sharan, Head of Research, Brickwork Ratings.
However, the rupee’s drop back from 94.50 shows a clear limit to how high it can go. Traders know that companies buying cheaper dollars and the central bank buying dollars to refill its reserves will stop the currency from gaining too fast, he added.

Stock Market LIVE: FPI Flows Depend More On Earnings Growth, Valuations Than Capital Gains Tax: Pranay Aggarwal Of Stoxkart
Taxation is definitely one of the factors foreign investors consider, but it is not the primary reason money flows into or out of India, said Pranay Aggarwal, Director & CEO, Stoxkart.
Since July 23, 2024, India has taxed short-term capital gains on listed stocks at 20% and long-term capital gains at 12.5%, after the Rs 1.25 lakh exemption. With surcharge and cess, the effective tax burden is higher.
While this makes India relatively less attractive compared with markets offering full or partial exemptions on equity gains, investors place greater weight on valuations, earnings growth, rupee movement, global interest rates and alternative investment opportunities. Taxation is an additional negative, not the whole story, said Aggarwal.
Reducing capital gains taxes could improve India’s competitiveness and make the market more attractive to global funds. However, tax relief alone cannot ensure sustained FPI inflows. Indonesia, despite having a low 0.1% tax on listed equity trades, has not consistently outperformed India. Investors ultimately seek good risk-adjusted returns, supported by earnings growth, stable policies, reasonable valuations and currency stability, he added.
Market performance also reinforces that tax rates alone do not determine investment flows. As of October 20, 2026, five-year annualised returns in US dollar terms were approximately 20.3% for Taiwan, 16.1% for South Korea and just 0.4% for India. Taiwan and South Korea benefited significantly from the technology and semiconductor boom, while Indonesia, despite its low transaction tax, recorded a 3% decline. Ultimately, earnings momentum, valuations, growth prospects and returns after currency movements matter more to foreign investors than tax incentives alone, he added.

Stock Market LIVE: Silver Set to Outshine Copper: Ratio Rebounds From 200-Week Average

The ratio has bounced from the 200-week SMA with a strong weekly candle and fading selling volume. The brokerage firm expects Silver to outperform Copper towards 1,396–1,516 in the coming weeks. A weekly close below 1,265 would negate the view and open 1,208.
Stock Market LIVE: Long-Term Outlook For Gold Remains Positive: Avinash Agarwal
Gold and silver have witnessed healthy correction over the past six to eight months, making their price movements worth watching.
According to Avinash Agarwal, Senior Vice President and Head of Equity at Bandhan Life, the long-term outlook for gold remains positive, supported by central banks increasing their gold purchases and the gradual shift in investor preference towards gold as an alternative to the US dollar.
However, gold prices will remain sensitive to US bond yields, the dollar’s movement and the US government’s fiscal policies. For Indian investors, rupee movements will also influence domestic gold prices. If the US addresses its fiscal deficit, gold could face near-term pressure; otherwise, its positive momentum may continue, he added.
