India's stock benchmarks ended higher on Friday to record a third consecutive week of gains, aided by advances in metals, PSU banks, and media stocks.
The Sensex ended 0.19% higher at 60, 950.36 on the BSE, while the Nifty 50 closed 0.36% higher at 18,117.15 on the NSE. Twenty eight of the Nifty 50 stocks advance, while 22 declined.
The indices traversed through volatility during the later part of the week amid Federal Reserve's 75 basis points rate hike that triggered recessionary fears.
Adani Enterprises Ltd., Hindalco Industries Ltd., Bajaj Finserv Ltd., JSW Steel Ltd., and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. were the top gainers, while Hero MotoCorp Ltd., Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., Cipla Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd. and Divi's Laboratories Ltd. were the top laggards on Nifty 50.
The broader indices outperformed their larger peers with the small cap gaining 0.41%, while the large cap almost mirrored their large peers gaining 0.35%. The mid cap underperformed by declining 0.10%.
Fourteen of the 20 sectoral measures complied by BSE Ltd. advanced with metal and commodities gaining over 2%.
The market breadth is skewed in favour of the bulls. About 2,036 stocks rose, 1,410 fell and 139 remained unchanged.
