The pan-India Southwest monsoon rainfall was below normal at 92% of long period average in June 2022, in line with the lower end of the forecast range (92-108%) for the month provided in the Indian Meteorological Department's report released in May 2022.
The rainfall in June 2022 was highly uneven; three of the four weeks in June 2022 witnessed subpar rains at the pan-India level, amid a sharp 45% surplus recorded in the third week.
All regions barring the East and Northeast witnessed a deficient rainfall in June 2022.
With a large rainfall deficit, the all-India reservoir storage lagged the year-ago level at end-June 2022 by four percentage points.
Moreover, kharif sowing reported a YoY decline of 5.3% as on July 1, 2022, albeit a moderation from the 24.8% shortfall recorded on June 24, 2022.
