High costs of electric vehicles and the need for conducive infrastructure are the key challenges for an entry into the electric vehicles segment, RS Kalsi, Senior Executive Director of Maruti Suzuki Ltd. told BloombergQuint on the sidelines of the SIAM Conference.

The automaker is mulling a foray into the electric vehicle segment, Chairman RC Bhargava had said at its annual general meeting earlier this year.

It has communicated its concerns on high tax burden on hybrid vehicles, where it has significant presence, to auto industry body SIAM, Kalsi said at the SIAM Conference in New Delhi. It will now await the decision of the Goods and Services Tax Council on the matter, he added.

Maruti is looking at a 16-17 percent sales growth during the festive season, buoyed by good monsoons.
