Two decades after Hannah Montana first premiered and transformed her into a global sensation, Miley Cyrus is returning to the world that launched her career. The Grammy-winning singer-actor has officially announced a 20th anniversary special for the iconic Disney Channel series, set to stream on Disney+ on March 24 — exactly 20 years after the show's debut in 2006.
The announcement was accompanied by a nostalgic teaser featuring a car with the license plate “HM 20” driving onto Stage 9 of a studio lot as The Best of Both Worlds plays in the background. The clip ends with a pair of black heels stepping out, instantly sparking excitement among long-time fans across social media.
The special will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and will centre on an in-depth, personal conversation between Cyrus and Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper. The interview is expected to explore the making of the series, the creation of its central character and the lasting cultural footprint of a show that defined a generation. Viewers will also get access to never-before-seen archival material, while some of the most recognisable sets — including the Stewart family living room and the glittering Hannah Montana closet — will be recreated for the celebration.
Reflecting on the milestone, Cyrus described the show as an inseparable part of her life, calling the anniversary a “Hannahversary” and a tribute to the fans who have kept its legacy alive for two decades. Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis echoed the sentiment, calling the special a “love letter” to audiences who continue to connect with its message of self-expression and embracing every side of one's identity.
Originally running from 2006 to 2011, Hannah Montana followed teenager Miley Stewart, who balanced ordinary school life with her secret identity as a world-famous pop star. The series also starred Billy Ray Cyrus, Emily Osment, Mitchell Musso and Jason Earles, and featured guest appearances by major names including Dolly Parton, the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez.
The anniversary event is produced by HopeTown Entertainment and Unwell Productions, with Cyrus, Cooper, Tish Cyrus-Purcell and Matt Kaplan serving as executive producers.
Ahead of the premiere, Disney+ will also roll out a dedicated Hannah Montana collection, including all four seasons, the feature film and the concert special — setting the stage for a nostalgic return to the “best of both worlds.”
