Sangeetha Sornalingam, the wife of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, has reportedly filed for divorce, seeking to end their 25-year-long marriage.
The petition has been submitted under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and is currently before the district court.
According to reportes, Sangeetha, 48, has cited adultery and cruelty as the primary grounds for dissolution of the marriage.
In her plea, she has alleged that Vijay, 51, has been in a relationship with a fellow actor.
The case has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, which permit divorce on the grounds of adultery and cruelty. The court is yet to take a final view on the matter, and no order has been passed so far.
Married Since 1999
Vijay and Sangeetha were married on August 25, 1999, in a high-profile ceremony that included both Hindu and Christian rituals. Their relationship began when Sangeetha, the daughter of a Chennai-based industrialist and a long-time admirer of the actor, met him during the early phase of his film career. Over the years, the couple largely kept their personal life away from the public eye.
They have two children — Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. While Jason Sanjay has already stepped into the film industry as a filmmaker, the family has otherwise maintained a low public profile, even as Vijay's career expanded into politics with the launch of his party, TVK.
As of now, the actor-politician has not issued any public statement regarding the allegations or the legal proceedings.
The matter is expected to come up for further hearing in the coming weeks.
