The Lok Sabha passed on Tuesday, the Boilers Bill, 2024, which focuses on regulating boilers, ensuring the safety of life and property from steam-boiler explosions and standardising registration processes.

This bill seeks to replace the century-old Boilers Act of 1923.

Previously passed by the Rajya Sabha in December, the bill decriminalises seven offences, promotes ease of doing business and emphasises worker safety. It mandates that boiler repairs must be carried out by qualified and competent individuals.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who introduced the bill, highlighted the removal of outdated colonial-era provisions, aiming to modernise and simplify the law. "We have made the bill simple and readable," he stated.

Allaying concerns of certain members, he said the legislation was not taking away powers of the state governments.

None of the rights of states has been taken away with the law, the minister assured the members.

The opposition members walked out during Goyal's reply when he was criticising the previous Congress-led government for delaying this law.
