Treasury's Muzinich Said to Be Considered for Under Secretary

(Bloomberg) -- Justin Muzinich, a counselor to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is being considered for nomination to be under secretary for domestic finance, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Muzinich, a former Morgan Stanley banker who joined Mnuchin's team in March as a counselor, has focused on the administration's tax plan. The under secretary position, which requires Senate confirmation, has remained vacant since Mary Miller left in 2014. A decision on who will take the role has not been finalized, the people said.

Under Mnuchin, ex-BlackRock Inc. executive Craig Phillips has been handling some of the duties of the under secretary job in the domestic finance office, according to two people familiar with the matter. Phillips, one of five counselors at Treasury, a year ago was preparing to take a role in a Hillary Clinton administration and is considered unlikely to win Senate confirmation for an under secretary job because of his Democratic ties, the people said.
