At least 11 people, including children, were killed in a multi‑vehicle crash caused by a suspected brake failure in a truck in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district, police said on Thursday. The accident occurred around 8.30 pm on Wednesday on National Highway‑135, on a downhill stretch from the Dramandganj valley towards Lasoda, about 50 km from the district headquarters.
Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations with the help of local residents, Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik told news agency PTI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the incident and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
"Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to the mishap in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the quick recovery of the injured. An ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the tragic mishap. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," he wrote in a post on X.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences over the incident, describing it as “extremely tragic and heart‑rending”. In a post on X on Thursday morning, he said his sympathies were with the bereaved families and that officials had been directed to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. "I pray to Lord Ram that the departed souls attain eternal peace, the grief‑stricken families are given strength to bear this immense loss, and the injured recover swiftly," he said.

Those killed from Mirzapur's Jigna area were identified as Shiva Singh (8), Sonam Singh (9), Piyush Singh (14), Pankaj Singh (40), Vandana Singh (43), Vishnu Singh (45) and Veena Singh (47). The other victims were Kartikeya Singh (18) and Priyanka Singh (42) from Satna district in Madhya Pradesh, Vikas Sharma (32) from Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, and Jai Prakash (27) from Sonbhadra, officials told news agency PTI.
