1. TN Bids a Calm, Tearful Farewell as Jaya Is Laid to Rest Next to MGR's Grave
With the sunset as backdrop and rendition of the last post by military personnel, AIADMK supremo and four-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa's coffin was lowered into a vault in the MGR memorial complex on Marina beach around 6 pm on Tuesday.
Jayalalithaa, the redoubtable fighter who earned a place in the pantheon of national stateswomen, was in hospital since 22 September and had a cardiac arrest on Sunday.
After attempts to revive her failed, she was put on life support, but her condition continued to slide. She was declared dead on Monday just before midnight. Her body draped in a green and red Kanjeevaram sari, lay in state from 5 am at Rajaji Hall, a few kilometres from where she was buried.

Twenty-four years after the disputed Babri Masjid was demolished in Ayodhya, it continues to be a key political factor in Uttar Pradesh.
In the run-up to the upcoming elections in the state, almost all major political parties have made Ayodhya a part of their campaign.
The first glimpse of the political relevance of Ayodhya became visible when Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi visited Hanuman Garhi temple on 9 September as part of the party's state-wide election campaign.
Although Gandhi skipped a visit to the Ram temple at the disputed Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid site, he is the first member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to have visited Ayodhya since the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992.

3. CJI Thakur Recommends Justice JS Khehar as His Successor
Chief Justice of India TS Thakur recommended the government to appointment Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar as his successor.
Justice Khehar, 64, will be the first Chief Justice from the Sikh community.
chdslsa.gov.in) ">CJI Thakur will retire from office on 3 January 2017. As per the memorandum of procedure, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had written to Justice Thakur to name his successor in November. Justice Thakur responded on Tuesday by naming his number two as the next CJI.
Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar led the five-judge constitution bench in the Supreme Court which had struck down the controversial NJAC Act for appointment of judges, was on Tuesday recommended as the 44th Chief Justice of India. Justice Khehar, who will be sworn in on 4 January will hold the tenure for over seven months till 27 August 2017.

4. Drama Over Mamata Banerjee's Flight: 6 Pilots of 3 Airlines Grounded
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Tuesday suspended six pilots – two each from IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India – who had reported running low on fuel while landing in Kolkata last Wednesday.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was on board the IndiGo Patna-Kolkata flight and the AI and Spice-Jet planes were ahead of her aircraft in landing sequence.
Banerjee's party had turned the issue of fuel shortage and alleged denial of emergency landing into a political controversy.

5. Leg-Up for Swadeshi Science – Govt Funds NGO Festival, Ignores Policy-Makers' Concerns
The Narendra Modi government has ignored concerns expressed by science policy-makers to fund a five-day science festival that will help an NGO with Sangh ties to make money.
Four government science departments are spending Rs 3 crore each on the India International Science Festival, jointly organised with Vijnana Bharati, whose stated goals include promoting "swadeshi science" and "Bharatiya" heritage.
Despite the government providing all the funding, it's the NGO that will be mopping up the entire revenue from the stalls that rent space, many of which will be government science agencies.

6. Bengal BJP Man Held With Rs 10 Lakh in New Notes
A BJP member, who had contested this year's assembly poll in West Bengal, and a coal mafia don were arrested along with some truck owners from the Raniganj coal belt with stacks of new currency in their possession on Tuesday.
The Kolkata Police STF seized Rs 33 lakh in cash, seven guns and 89 rounds of ammunition from their possession.
Around Rs 10 lakh was found on BJP's Manish Sharma alias Manish Joshi (44). He was found travelling in the same car as four other accused and was caught with the cash and weapons.

7. Bengaluru Tops in Income Tax Probes After Demonetisation
Karnataka, in particular Bengaluru, is turning out to be the biggest hotspot for illegal cash transactions in the country post the demonetisation announcement, as the city investigation unit of the Income Tax (I-T) department has sent 18 references to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) wherein the highest cases of undisclosed cash in new denominations have been seized.
In comparison, two cases each from Ludhiana and Bhopal have been referred to investigative agencies along with a case each from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune among other cities, the department said in its statement on Tuesday.

8. Army Nod Awaited for NIA Probe Into Nagrota
The Home Ministry is waiting for the go-ahead from the Army to take over the investigation into the recent terror attack at the Nagrota camp, in which two officers and five soldiers lost their lives.
An Army source said the force would okay an NIA investigation if it came with a “specific brief”, but made it clear that it was for the Army to investigate the “operational and tactical aspects”.
Though the Home Ministry can suo motu transfer the investigation of any terror attack to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), it has to seek the Army's approval in this case as the attack happened in an Army camp.

9. Demonetisation: Government May Take Ordinance Route to Cancel Unreturned Currency
The government may issue an ordinance to provide clear legal support for extinguishing the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that are not returned by 30 December.
The government wants to amend the Reserve Bank of India Act to this effect and ordinance route may be opted for as the Parliament would not be in session immediately after the last day of surrender.
The ongoing winter session of Parliament – disrupted by protests as it has been – ends on 16 December and the budget session will start only late January.
An ordinance will pave the way for cancelling the said currency once the amount of money returned becomes clear on 31 December. “We could look at it (an ordinance),” said a government official.
