In an unprecedented outcome in the history of Tamil Nadu politics, the recent Legislative Assembly elections have delivered a fractured mandate, leaving no single party with enough seats to independently form the government. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan issued a strong statement, urging constitutional authorities to respect the democratic verdict delivered by the people of Tamil Nadu.
As the result has triggered intense political discussions and renewed focus on constitutional conventions surrounding government formation, Haasan, emphasizing that his remarks were rooted in democratic principles rather than party politics, posted on X, saying the mandate of the electorate must be honored without delay, “In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, the people have not granted any single party the authority to form a government independently. This outcome is unprecedented in the history of Tamil Nadu.”
Referring to the response of MK Stalin, Haasan praised the DMK leader's announcement that his party would “respect the people's verdict” and function as a responsible opposition. He described the statement as a sign of political maturity during a sensitive moment in the state's political history.

He added, “Those currently in constitutional positions must now fulfill the same duty. This is not a demand, but a reminder of their constitutional obligation.”
Haasan also highlighted the performance of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, which reportedly secured 108 seats in the Assembly. According to Haasan, denying the party an opportunity to form the government would amount to disregarding the mandate of the people.
He further expressed concern that 233 elected legislators had yet to take their oaths, calling the delay “an insult to the state” and harmful to democratic functioning.
Citing the landmark SR Bommai v. Union of India judgment, Haasan stressed that the legislative majority must be tested on the floor of the Assembly and not decided within the Governor's residence, Raj Bhavan.
“What I am speaking is not party politics. This is the policy voice of an Indian citizen,” Haasan said, reiterating that the democratic verdict of the people of Tamil Nadu deserves full constitutional respect.
