The Delhi government has announced a series of austerity measures aimed at cutting fuel consumption and reducing avoidable expenditure, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for energy conservation and mindful spending.

As part of the initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that nearly half of official government meetings will now be conducted online, while colleges and universities have been encouraged to hold guest lectures and select academic sessions virtually wherever feasible.

However, the government has not ordered a return to full-fledged online classes in schools or colleges. Officials clarified that regular academic activities will continue offline, with the advisory focused mainly on reducing non-essential travel and logistical costs.

The Delhi government has also introduced work-from-home arrangements for government employees twice a week, reduced fuel quotas for official vehicles by 20%, and directed ministers and senior officials to use Metro services every Monday.

The measures come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to conserve fuel, prefer public transport, adopt carpooling, avoid unnecessary foreign travel, and support indigenous products while addressing a gathering in Secunderabad earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Yogi Adityanath has announced similar austerity steps in Uttar Pradesh, including reducing official vehicle fleets and promoting work-from-home practices to curb fuel consumption.
