Karnataka Police is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence-powered platform to monitor social media and other related digital platforms. This is aimed at combating misleading content, cybercrimes and fake news on the internet.

In order to tackle fake news and misinformation, the Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology has established the Information Disorder Tackling Unit. The new arm has been operational since last year. It has now been integrated with the newly established Cyber Command Unit.

According to Deccan Herald, Karnataka Police now plans to deploy agentic AI systems, which will independently scan the internet to flag harmful content for review.

A dedicated portal, satya.karnataka.gov.in, has also been introduced. This will publish all the content that is deemed to have broader public relevance, especially when it comes to misinformation.

The report states that these systems will be able to perform complex tasks autonomously and will provide real-time decisions.

According to a senior police official, who is working on this project, the AI-powered platform will work like a digital assistant for them. Once introduced, it will be deployed across the internet to identify harmful content and flag it. However, it must be noted that the platform will not be accessing the private conversations of people.

The flagged content will then be reviewed by the human operators. With time, these agentic AI systems will be able to make decisions themselves to remove harmful content on the internet.

Once the misinformation that can have a big impact on a larger audience gets detected, the AI system will work towards reframing it in a simpler format before it gets shared on the government platform (satya.karnataka.gov.in).

This comes at a time when AI is being widely adopted and agentic AI is expected to revolutionise industries via autonomous decision-making. Redefining how technology gets leveraged by businesses, these advanced systems are capable enough to learn and act on an independent basis.

Citizens will get to play a major role in this by flagging any sort of misleading information on the internet and sharing the verified one.

As soon as keywords get entered, this agentic AI system will flag any sort of "communal, false, misleading, and threatening content on social media," the officer told the news outlet.

Earlier, tenders were invited for the social media monitoring and analysis platform that caters to "users who need to monitor specific entities, such as organisations, brands, or topics”.
