The next meeting of the GST Council is likely to be held towards the end of May or in June, after the conclusion of key state assembly elections, sources told NDTV Profit on Thursday. The timing is being aligned to ensure adequate participation from states, which is essential for meeting quorum requirements.

Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry will hold elections this month. The results will be announced on May 4 and government formation is expected in the following days.

Officials said the Council is likely to convene only after the new state governments are in place.

As per rules, the GST Council requires the presence of at least 50% of its total members to meet quorum. Given that states together hold two-thirds of the voting weight in the Council, their participation is critical to decision-making. The Centre holds the remaining one-third voting weight, which grants it an effective veto power over decisions.

Decisions of the GST Council require a minimum of 75% of the weighted votes of members present and voting, underscoring the importance of broad state representation.
